How can impact investing transform Microfinance Institutions (MFIs) to become greener and provide green loans to Micro, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs) and smallholder farmers?
Traditional financial institutions have not served these segments and, as a result, MSMEs in Latin America face a financing gap of $900 billion, while the gap for farmers in the region is $20 billion. These gaps are the result of high perceived risk and the lack of adequate products, qualified personnel, processes, and technology to serve these segments with a green credit supply. However, if properly adapted, MFIs can effectively channel green finance to these two segments.
Agustin Vitórica (GAWA Capital) will discuss how impact investment firms can design a fund to offer solutions to a specific market failure and blended finance can be a great way to structure funds that help solve a specific social and environmental problem.

To understand the vulnerabilities of clients to foster green inclusive finance, detailed household data is needed.
Christoph Jungfleisch from YAPU Solutions, and Ricardo Romero from the Guatemalan MFI
Fundación Génésis Empresarial (FGE),
will present the successful collaborative project between the two organizations to develop a highly
customized weather
risk management system that facilitates credit decisions.
The system leverages satellite data as well as external exposure data from CIAT/CGIAR on climate risk patterns. Furthermore, it includes data by FAO to determine the climate sensitivity of given crops. The underlying concept, which helps to assess the climate risk for a given end customer (mostly smallholder farmers) is climate vulnerability. The analysis provided by the climate risk management system not only provides an analysis at the end-customer level, but also at the portfolio level.
Since the increase of productivity and resilience through the financing of climate solutions (or NbS) is a particular goal of FGE, the system also allows for the green microcredit verification

To understand the vulnerabilities of clients to foster green inclusive finance, detailed household data is needed.
Within the framework of the IMPACT-R project access to basic services at client level of
MFIs and NGOs has been assessed in Latin America, Sub-Saharan Africa, and South Asia.
Comprehensive data collection at the household and business level on energy access, water, sanitation,
and hygiene and food security has started with 9 organizations and consortiums.
Through the digital tools provided by HEDERA Sustainable Solutions, the data collection campaigns have gathered data on standard
indicators to track the status of SDGs 1, 2, 6, and 7 and develop a baseline for each organization for future impact assessment,
employing international frameworks from the ESMAP - World Bank, United Nations (UN) Joint Monitoring Programme, and the UN Food and
Agriculture Organization.
Natalia Realpe Carrillo will present an overview and insights from the IMPACT-R project,
upcoming call for proposals and next steps.
