A Health Vulnerability Index

One of the aspects that relates lack of access to clean energy, clean water, and food insecurity is the increase in the vulnerability of underserved population to health diseases and their increased risk of safety issues.

We developed a Health Vulnerability Index based on different aspects, ranging from the usage of biomass for cooking to the feeling of risk using shared sanitaton facilities.

Considered questions

Energy Access

  • Injuries caused from the cooking solution (stove/fuel): In the last 12 months, did you or anyone in your households experience any injury or accidents while cooking?

  • Injuries due to the electricity source: In the last 12 months, did any household members have injury or damage because of the electricity_source?

  • Cooking fuel/stove: Is the cooking fuel dangerous for health? (e.g., wood or plastic) Does the cooking place have enough ventilation?

Access to clean water

  • Source of water: What is the main source of drinking water? Which other sources of water are used for other purposes?

  • Quality of drinking water: Is the water supplied from your main source usually acceptable in terms of quality? If the water is unacceptable in terms of quality, what is the main problem with it?

  • Quality of drinking water (cont.): Is the water treated before drinking it? How?

  • Availability of clean water: Has there been any time in the last month when you have not been able to store sufficient water to meet your needs?

Sanitation & Hygiene practices

  • Shared/Own facilities: Is the toiled shared with other households? (known or unknown)

  • Risks when using the toilet: Do you or other household members face any risks when using the toilet?

  • Emptying of septic tabk: Has the septic tank ever been emptied? When?

  • Hyiene practices: Are there water and soap available at the handwashing place?

Methodology

The index is computed via a scoring point, assigning to each question - and to each possible answer in the question - a score between 0 anc 100. The scoring system is currently object of ongoign research and will be studied in more details throughout the project implementation and after its finalization. Details will be provided in an upcoming publication.
